Despite a long, wet winter so far there is always a little gem to find in the garden...

The tiniest area in the garden can still shine with winter colour and snowdrops, looking like little pearls amongst evergreen foliage, provide a reminder that spring is around the corner- hence snowdrops have long been viewed as a symbol of hope.

There are hundreds of varieties, including showy doubles, but I prefer the simple beauty of singles which flower while other more showy spring bulbs are still just green shoots.

Although they look very delicate, these hard as nails bulbs will push through the most frosted or snowy ground & often continue to flower until March. They quickly establish and spread, as long as you keep newly planted clumps well watered, preferring damp, shady areas.

They are best divided 'in the green' i.e while the leaves are still green, so as the flowers begin to fade make sure you divide clumps & transplant elsewhere before they completely die back to gradually create a sweeping carpet of white early spring beauty, You will thank me next year...
